Agarwood Aceh is obtained by distilling the heartwood of the genus Aquilaria SP, a flowering tree of various species that grows in Indonesia: Aceh, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, and Sumbawa. Only trees that have been infected with parasitic fungi (Phialophora parasitica and others) are the source of this rare and very valuable material. Infected trees will produce oleoresin which, after a few years, darkens and is highly aromatic. Oleoresin accumulates in such a way that the mass and density of the infected wood causes it to sink in water.
Our agarwood essential oil source tree comes from Sumatra (especially Aceh) which is harvested and replanted regularly to be sustainable. When they reached the age of ten, they were manually inoculated; after two years of propagation, the trees were harvested for distillation.
