Botanical:
Patchouli is believed to belong to the Lamiaceae family which is also known as the mint family which has the botanical name Pogostemon cablin. It grows like a bushy herb and has erect stems that reach a height of 75cm. This plant has small pale pink-white flowers.
A brief History:
In the US and Europe, it is believed to be the counter-cultural revolution during the 60s that brought the influence of the use of this oil to the world. It is surprising how the association of smell and aromatic memory persists in the social consciousness for years. This affects the general perception of the plant and the oil extracted from it.
Usage History:
Traditionally, this oil is used in traditional medicinal preparations in many Asian countries to treat oily scalp, dandruff, dry skin, eczema and acne. In the 1800s, the oil is assumed to get its name from the Hindi word, “pacholi” which means aroma. The oil is believed to be used for this scent in the manufacture of Indian fabrics such as scarves and silk to repel moths and insects.
